Why do ufc fighters get patted down

Check it out! Joined: May 9, Messages: Likes Received: 1. What is this test? How can you tell someone has a cup on just by then manually jiggling themselves? Any examples? Sole , Apr 30, I remember one fighter on a tuf finale a long time ago forgetting a cup and someone from his team had to run backstage and borrow one from another fighter.

Something like that iirc I know it's not mma but close enough. Joined: Sep 5, Messages: 15, Likes Received: 5, Once that is completed, the next official steps in to do the frisking. And they are not just checking for excessive vaseline or other forms of lubrication on the body. But also a number of other things which I will list out below. With the idea being to make sure the fight is both fair and safe for both opponents. And in terms of UFC events, the official is normally a referee who will not be adjudicating that particular bout.

So they are free to carry out additional duties outside of the octagon. The official will firstly check for an excess vaseline on the body. Feeling with their hands all around the hair and head, including behind the ears. They will also run their hands across the shoulders, arms and hands.

Then finish off by checking the torso area and finally down to the legs and feet. The purpose of ensuring there is no excess Vaseline on the body. Fighters attempting to use vaseline in this way is a form of cheating known as greasing.

Throughout the early years of the sport, accusations of greasing were pretty common. And it would be especially likely to happen if a fighter was facing a known submission specialist.

With the extra vaseline helping them to escape their submission techniques. And so the official doing the frisking has to be on high alert. Some have hyposicised that the official is also looking for potential weapons that the fighter may try to sneak into the cage. Like a sharp blade or even some type of lotion that they can rub on their fingers.

Then into the eyes of their opponent during the fight, temporarily blinding them. And while this is not something we have seen in the UFC itself. There have been instances in smaller promotions of fighters cheating. As a newer fan, you may be left questioning the reason behind this. So why do UFC fighters get frisked?

In short, UFC fighters get frisked by the referee to ensure that the fighter does not have any foreign objects or illegal weapons that are hidden on their person. In other words, the fighters basically get patted down. So anyways, as soon as a fighter walks out to the cage, the referee is there waiting for the fighter, just outside the Octagon. Basically, what the referee is looking for here is any illegal object that could help the fighter once in the cage, or any weapon that could be used to hurt his opponent.

Of course, if a fighter hid a weapon on their person, and used it during the fight, it would be blatantly visible to the referee and everyone watching. In this way, the frisking is more of a formality, as the chance that a fighter would hide a razor blade or something similar on them is very small.

However, something that a referee might more realistically look for is slippery substances. Greasing provides an advantage when trying to escape a submission, as it is harder to apply a submission when there is less friction.

Mirko may never get that chance, at least not with Tim Sylvia at the helm. Randy proved me wrong by dominating a 5 round fight. The excitement was back and Randy Couture was back on top! Oh, did I forget to mention the perennial heavyweight contender Heath Herring?
