He joins the Inquisitor and party raiding a quarry where Samson and the Red Templars keep their base. When Samson is finally brought to justice, Cullen is there to ensure it's carried out properly. The confrontation with Samson reveals that Cullen has been striving to overcome his own addiction to lyrium, a difficult and harrowing choice that often leaves him feeling helpless, enraged and on the verge of madness.
The Inquisitor can either encourage Cullen to stay true to himself and on the path to a clean life without lyrium, or drive him to continue taking lyrium so he won't lose his edge. As a romance option, an Inquisitor who pushes him to continue taking lyrium loses the option to foster a permanent romantic relationship with him.
While in Val Royeaux, he can be found adopting an abandoned mabari hound and playing with it in the courtyard. An Inquisitor who romanced him will also be met with a marriage proposal. If Cullen manages to work through his lyrium addiction, he retires peacefully to the country with his mabari and establishes a sanctuary for former templars struggling with addiction.
If Cullen continues to take lyrium throughout Inquisition , he winds up a beggar on the streets, on the verge of madness as he seeks his next fix. Cassandra - Mid 30s Leliana - Early to mid 30s based on being relatively the same age as Alistair and the Warden in DA:O Cullen - Early to mid 30s, again assuming he was early to mid 20s in Origins, being a newish Templar and all Josephine - No idea, but I'd guess late 20s, early 30s?
She's probably a bit younger than Leliana Solas - The wiki says he's 40ish, but I have no idea where that information came from Varric - Probably about the same age as Hawke, so early 30s in Inquisition, right? Vivienne - I guess she's maybe supposed to be a bit older since she's a First Enchanter and won't sleep with you. Based off nothing but appearance Dorian - Anywhere from his late 20s to early 40s based on appearance. AFAIK he never gives anything in his backstory that hints at timeframes we could use to make a better guess.
Dragon Age: Inquisition released in and introduced players to an incredible open-world, brilliant new characters, a plot filled with twists and turns, and more. Fans of the Dragon Age franchise are waiting in anticipation for the next installment, Dragon Age 4 , and in the mean-time, many are replaying their old favorites to get their Thedas fix.
One of the main story characters of Inquisition is Cullen Rutherford, Commander of the Inquisition, one of three advisors to the Inquisitor and a possible love interest too.
While players might have spent their fair amount of time with the dashing commander in the game, there may be a thing or two about him that they weren't aware of. Even if they've played the entire Dragon Age series , many fans are surprised to hear that Inquisition wasn't the first game that Cullen appeared in.
He actually first appeared in Dragon Age: Origins in a small role as one of the templars assigned to execute the Magi if they turn into abominations. Players can attempt to romance him, but he will make some awkward excuses and run away.
Additionally, this earlier introduction of Cullen does not paint him as a great character as he will attempt to convince the Warden to kill all the mages during the Harrowing as he is worried they are blood mages.
Many players also missed Cullen's return in Dragon Age 2 , where he has since become Knight-Captain and is now second-in-command to Knight-Commander Meredith. Fortunately, Cullen's character in the sequel has been better developed and he is now dedicated to protecting the mages in the circle as much as protecting people from magic.
Though still a small role, Cullen is instrumental in helping Hawke to stop Meredith during the main storyline. Cullen has appeared in all three main titles in the series, but interestingly, each time his character was written by an entirely different Bioware writer.
