Origins Taoism has no founder and no founding date. Livia Kohn states that: Taoism as a religion began in the year C. Since its beginnings, many sects have arisen within Taoism. All subscribe to the philosophical origins of the religion; some have emphasized faith healing, exorcism, the worship of the immortals, meditation, or alchemy.
Buddhism and Confucianism influenced some sects; some operated as secret societies. Though the present Chinese government has tried to suppress it, Taoism is still practiced in mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
