I think the issue was that my kids also got hold of Mario Party 8 and that got them expecting a certain benchmark from games.

I find the quick nature of killing villains etc to be a good release for frustrations etc. Kids do seem to benefit emotionally from it in terms of confidence and being able to relax comfortably. My six year old loves Mario on the Wii u it's very entertaining. I believe that children at age 4 will like this game because they want to participate in the games that their older siblings play.
